DUBAI TRAVEL JOURNAL

I’m writing this sitting in a café somewhere Melbourne, wearing two woolen jumpers, it’s 6PM and dark outside. Looking at the photos I took during the two days I spent in Dubai seems – slightly – surreal. Having friends from all over the world is probably the best thing about studying at an international uni and being able to visit them at their houses is even better. I saw as much as I think was possible during the few days I had in the city and to be honest, although some of the stereotypes that were stuck in my head proofed to be right I had an amazing time, especially in Deira, the old town of Dubai and during our trip to the desert. I loved the colours, everything was somewhere between sand and pastel, and the dust and sand on everything seemed like nature’s own filter. I did take my camera once so a proper post will follow but here are some first impressions of Dubai.

Dubai is probably fulfilling all its clichés and stereotypes (yes, the malls were bigger than I could have imagined and I don’t think I have ever seen that many white landrovers in one place) but there is so much more to this city. Summer is probably not the best time to visit, admittedly, but for two days (knowing I would go back to winter after) it wasn’t too bad and I actually enjoyed the heat more than I would have thought. Dubai is sparkle and dust, flashlights and sand, artificial and old. I loved the contrast, and although I probably would have preferred a bit more old and a bit less over-the-top the two things complemented each other in a way I had never experienced in any city before.
